âYou guys made it!â Ryan clapped me hard on the shoulder, and a huge grin lit his face up as he ushered us into the already packed house.
Sydney grinned and pulled him into a quick hug. âOf course we did! Whereâs Roxie?â She stepped away from him to glance around the room, her eyes squinting through the crowds of people dancing to the pounding music.
âOh, sheâs up in her room,â Ryan said, pointing toward the steps.
Sydney nodded and then waved goodbye to us, quickly pushing her way through the crowd and disappearing up the steps. Ryan turned back toward Tyler and I. âCâmon, River is waiting for us.â He spun around and waved at groups of people who quickly cleared a path for him as he walked through.
I held back a snort at the sight. Itâs like Moses parting the Red Sea. I glanced at Tyler with an amused smirk. He looked back at me and shook his head, his lips forming a wide grin while he laughed and began to follow Ryan toward the kitchen.
I stood there for a minute, simply drinking in all the lights, music, and people dancing. Couples were making out within the crowd. In the kitchen I heard excited shouting as another team won a game of beer pong. Along the wall were people taking shots, laughing loudly, and stumbling about. The bass shook the whole room, which made it difficult to focus on anything else as the music racked through my body.
I walked forward slowly, edging my way through the people who made their way back into the pathway. I nodded at people as I passed by. Girls smiled at me seductively and reached out, their hands brushing down my arms as I passed. I smiled back at them but continued on, the smile quickly slipping off my face at the sight before me. I glared darkly at the table, disgust curling around my chest.
Ryan lifted his head up from his spot on the counter and caught sight of me at the doorway, a wide smile splitting across his face as he raised his beer in the air. âAxel! Get over here, buddy,â he said as he waved me over.
My eyes flickered over to where River was bent over the table, holding back my rage when he took a long drag, white smoke rolling past his lips as he exhaled. His eyes bloodshot as he stared at the smoke hitting the ceiling, completely dazed. The smell of the drugs was putrid to my lungs.
He snapped out of his daze and then ushered Tyler to go next, the white lines of powder already waiting for him to inhale. I charged over to him, angrily shoving his shoulder once I got close to him. He fumbled to catch himself on the table, his eyes frantically glancing around before they landed on me.
I glared at him and grabbed his arm, dragging him away from the little group gathered at the counter.
